Definition

Comparing whole numbers means deciding which number is larger, smaller, or if they are equal.
We use these symbols:
  • >> means greater than (the number on the left is larger)
  • << means less than (the number on the left is smaller)
  • == means equal to (both numbers are the same)

The place value method: Compare digits from left to right, starting with the largest place value. The first digit that is different tells you which number is larger.
