Calculating Sales Tax
Finding the Tax Amount
A video game costs 60 dollars. The sales tax rate is 8%. How much is the tax?
Identify the values: Price = 60 dollars, Tax rate = 8% = We have our starting values
Convert percent to decimal: $8\% = 8 \div 100 = 0.08$ = Tax rate as decimal: $0.08$
Calculate the tax: $60 \times 0.08 = 4.80$ = Tax amount: 4.80 dollars
Answer: The sales tax is 4.80 dollars
Finding the Total Price
A jacket costs 85 dollars. With 6% sales tax, what is the total price?
Calculate the tax amount: $85 \times 0.06 = 5.10$ = Tax: 5.10 dollars
Add tax to original price: $85 + 5.10 = 90.10$ = Total: 90.10 dollars
Answer: The total price including tax is 90.10 dollars
Using the One-Step Method
A bicycle costs 250 dollars. The tax rate is 7.5%. Find the total price using one calculation.
Convert tax rate to decimal: $7.5\% = 0.075$ = Decimal: $0.075$
Add 1 to get the multiplier: $1 + 0.075 = 1.075$ = Multiplier: $1.075$
Multiply price by multiplier: $250 \times 1.075 = 268.75$ = Total: 268.75 dollars
Answer: The total price is 268.75 dollars. This method gives you the total in one step!
Calculating Tax on Multiple Items
You buy a shirt for 25 dollars, pants for 40 dollars, and shoes for 65 dollars. The tax rate is 8.25%. What is the total cost?
Find the subtotal: $25 + 40 + 65 = 130$ = Subtotal: 130 dollars
Convert tax rate to decimal: $8.25\% = 0.0825$ = Decimal: $0.0825$
Calculate the tax: $130 \times 0.0825 = 10.725$ = Tax: 10.73 dollars (rounded)
Find the total: $130 + 10.73 = 140.73$ = Total: 140.73 dollars
Answer: The total cost including tax is 140.73 dollars
Mistake: Using the percentage directly without converting to a decimal
Why: Multiplying by 8 instead of 0.08 gives a number 100 times too large!
Correct: Always divide the percentage by 100 first: $8\% = 0.08$
Mistake: Forgetting to add the tax to the original price
Why: The tax amount alone is not what you pay - you pay the original price PLUS the tax.
Correct: Total = Price + Tax Amount, or use the one-step method: Price $\times$ (1 + rate)
Mistake: Rounding incorrectly with money
Why: Money should be rounded to the nearest cent (2 decimal places).
Correct: Round 10.725 to 10.73, not 10.7 or 11
Shopping Trip
Before you go shopping, you can calculate approximately how much you'll spend including tax.
If you have 50 dollars to spend and tax is 6%, your maximum purchase is about 47 dollars (because 47 + tax ≈ 50).
Restaurant Bills
When dining out, tax is added to your food total before you calculate the tip.
A meal costs 35 dollars. With 7% tax, the taxed total is 37.45 dollars. Then you add tip on top of that.
Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of purchases
Tax Amount = Price $\times$ Tax Rate (as a decimal)
Total Price = Price + Tax Amount
One-step method: Total = Price $\times$ (1 + Tax Rate)
Always convert percentages to decimals: $8\% = 0.08$
Round money answers to the nearest cent (2 decimal places)
Q: Why do different places have different tax rates?
A: Sales tax is set by governments (state, province, or country). Each region decides its own rate based on how much revenue it needs for public services like schools and roads.
Q: Is tax always added to everything?
A: Not always! In many places, groceries, medicine, and clothing for children are tax-free or have lower rates. It depends on local laws.
Q: Why do we use the multiplier 1.08 instead of 0.08?
A: When you multiply by 0.08, you get ONLY the tax. When you multiply by 1.08, you get the original price (1) PLUS the tax (0.08) in one step. It is faster!
