What Are Fractions
Reading a Fraction
A chocolate bar is divided into 6 equal pieces. You eat 2 pieces. What fraction of the chocolate bar did you eat?
Count the total equal parts: The bar is divided into 6 equal pieces = Denominator = 6
Count how many parts you have: You ate 2 pieces = Numerator = 2
Write the fraction: $\frac{\text{parts eaten}}{\text{total parts}} = \frac{2}{6}$ = $\frac{2}{6}$
Answer: You ate $\frac{2}{6}$ of the chocolate bar.
Understanding Parts of a Whole
A pizza is cut into 8 equal slices. 3 slices are pepperoni and 5 slices are cheese. What fraction of the pizza is pepperoni?
Identify the whole: The whole pizza has 8 slices = Denominator = 8
Identify the part we're asking about: We want the pepperoni portion: 3 slices = Numerator = 3
Write the fraction: $\frac{\text{pepperoni slices}}{\text{total slices}} = \frac{3}{8}$ = $\frac{3}{8}$
Answer: $\frac{3}{8}$ of the pizza is pepperoni.
Fractions in Measurement
A ribbon is 1 meter long. You cut off a piece that is $\frac{1}{4}$ of the ribbon. How long is the piece you cut?
Understand the fraction: $\frac{1}{4}$ means 1 part out of 4 equal parts = Divide the ribbon into 4 equal parts
Find the size of each part: $1 \text{ meter} \div 4 = 0.25 \text{ meters}$ = Each part is 0.25 m or 25 cm
Answer the question: You cut 1 of those 4 parts = 25 cm or $\frac{1}{4}$ meter
Answer: The piece is 25 centimeters (or $\frac{1}{4}$ of a meter) long.
Mistake: Confusing the numerator and denominator
Why: It's easy to mix up which number goes on top. The numerator (parts we have) goes on top; the denominator (total parts) goes on the bottom.
Correct: Remember: the Denominator goes Down (both start with D). The numerator is the Number of parts you have.
Mistake: Thinking a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction
Why: A bigger denominator means the whole is cut into MORE pieces, so each piece is SMALLER.
Correct: $\frac{1}{8}$ is smaller than $\frac{1}{4}$ because cutting something into 8 pieces makes smaller pieces than cutting into 4.
Mistake: Forgetting that parts must be equal
Why: Fractions only work when all parts are the same size. Unequal parts don't form true fractions.
Correct: If a pizza is cut into 4 unequal slices, you can't say each piece is $\frac{1}{4}$. The slices must be equal.
Cooking and Baking
Recipes use fractions to measure ingredients precisely.
A cookie recipe needs $\frac{3}{4}$ cup of flour. This means you fill a 1-cup measure to the $\frac{3}{4}$ mark.
Sharing Fairly
Fractions help us divide things equally among people.
If 3 friends share a cake equally, each person gets $\frac{1}{3}$ of the cake.
Time
We use fractions to describe parts of an hour.
A quarter of an hour is $\frac{1}{4}$ of 60 minutes, which equals 15 minutes.
A fraction represents a part of a whole
The numerator (top) tells how many parts we have
The denominator (bottom) tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into
All parts must be equal for the fraction to be accurate
Larger denominators mean smaller pieces: $\frac{1}{8} < \frac{1}{4}$
Q: What does the line in a fraction mean?
A: The line (called a vinculum) means 'divided by' or 'out of.' So $\frac{3}{4}$ means '3 divided by 4' or '3 out of 4.'
Q: Can a fraction be bigger than 1?
A: Yes! When the numerator is bigger than the denominator, the fraction is greater than 1. For example, $\frac{5}{4}$ means you have 5 parts when the whole only has 4, so that's more than 1 whole.
Q: Is $\frac{4}{4}$ the same as 1?
A: Yes! When the numerator equals the denominator, you have all the parts, which equals 1 whole. $\frac{4}{4} = \frac{8}{8} = \frac{100}{100} = 1$
