Definition

A perfect square is a number that can be expressed as a whole number multiplied by itself.
We write this using exponents: n2=n×nn^2 = n \times n
The first positive perfect squares are:
1,4,9,16,25,36,49,64,81,100,…1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, \ldots
These come from:
  • 12=1×1=11^2 = 1 \times 1 = 1
  • 22=2×2=42^2 = 2 \times 2 = 4
  • 32=3×3=93^2 = 3 \times 3 = 9
  • 42=4×4=164^2 = 4 \times 4 = 16
  • And so on...
The name "perfect square" comes from geometry: these numbers represent the area of a square with whole number side lengths.
