Definition

A dot plot (also called a line plot) is a simple way to display data using dots above a number line.
Each dot represents one piece of data:
  • The horizontal axis shows the values or categories
  • Dots are stacked vertically when values repeat
Number of dots=Frequency of that value\text{Number of dots} = \text{Frequency of that value}
Dot plots make it easy to:
  • See which values occur most often (mode)
  • Find the range of data (highest - lowest)
  • Spot gaps and clusters in the data

Worked Examples

Common Mistakes

Forgetting to stack dots for repeated values

Why it's wrong: Each dot represents one data point. If 5 students have 2 pets, you need 5 dots above 2, not just 1.

Correct: Always count how many times each value appears and stack that many dots.

Leaving gaps in the number line

Why it's wrong: If data ranges from 2 to 6 but no one has 4, you still need 4 on the number line.

Correct: Include all values in the range, even if some have zero dots (showing gaps is useful!).

Confusing frequency with value

Why it's wrong: The height (number of stacked dots) shows how often a value occurs, not the value itself.

Correct: The x-axis shows values; the number of dots shows frequency.
