For Teachers
- Apply the distance formula to find distance when rate and time are known
- Rearrange the formula to solve for rate () or time ()
- Convert units appropriately before performing calculations
- Solve multi-step word problems involving distance, rate, and time
- • Understanding of multiplication and division
- • Ability to work with fractions and decimals
- • Basic unit conversion (minutes to hours)
- • Familiarity with setting up algebraic equations
- 1. Why is it important to check that your units match before solving a problem?
- 2. If two cars travel the same distance but one is faster, what can you say about their travel times?
- 3. How would you find the average speed for a trip with two parts at different speeds?
- 4. In real life, why might your actual travel time differ from the calculated time?
Average speed is the average of the two speeds
Remediation: Show with a numerical example: driving 60 km at 30 km/h (2 hours) then 60 km at 60 km/h (1 hour) gives 120 km in 3 hours = 40 km/h average, not 45 km/h.
More distance always means more time
Remediation: Emphasize that time depends on both distance AND rate. A fast car can cover more distance in less time than a slow bicycle covers a short distance.
Minutes and hours can be used interchangeably
Remediation: Show how using minutes with km/h gives wrong answers. Practice converting: 30 min = 0.5 hours, 90 min = 1.5 hours.
For Struggling Students:
- • Provide a pre-made formula triangle visual
- • Use only whole number answers initially
- • Focus on one formula version at a time (start with finding distance)
For On-Level Students:
- • Include problems requiring unit conversion
- • Solve for different variables in the same problem set
- • Add two-part journey problems
For Advanced Students:
- • Problems with objects moving toward or away from each other
- • Calculate when two travelers will meet
- • Problems involving current (boats/planes with wind)

- = rate (speed or how fast it travels)
- = time (how long it travels)

- Rate:
- Time:
Glossary
- Distance
- The total length traveled, measured in units like kilometers (km), meters (m), or miles (mi)
- Rate
- How fast something travels, measured in units like km/h (kilometers per hour) or m/s (meters per second)
- Time
- How long the journey takes, measured in hours, minutes, or seconds
- Average speed
- Total distance divided by total time, giving one speed that represents the entire journey
Formula Card
Distance Formula
Distance equals rate times time
Rate Formula
Rate equals distance divided by time
Time Formula
Time equals distance divided by rate
