Length is the measurement of how long something is from one end to the other.
We measure length using units. A unit is a standard amount that everyone agrees on, so measurements mean the same thing to everyone.

Standard Units

There are two main measurement systems:
Metric System (used worldwide):
  • Millimeter (mm) - tiny, like the thickness of a credit card
  • Centimeter (cm) - about the width of your fingernail
  • Meter (m) - about the height of a door handle from the floor
  • Kilometer (km) - about a 10-minute walk
