Definition

Length is the measurement of how long something is from one end to the other.
We measure length using units. A unit is a standard amount that everyone agrees on, so measurements mean the same thing to everyone.

Standard Units

There are two main measurement systems:
Metric System (used worldwide):
  • Millimeter (mm) - tiny, like the thickness of a credit card
  • Centimeter (cm) - about the width of your fingernail
  • Meter (m) - about the height of a door handle from the floor
  • Kilometer (km) - about a 10-minute walk
Imperial System (used in US, UK):
  • Inch (in) - about the length of a paper clip
  • Foot (ft) - about the length of a school ruler
  • Yard (yd) - about one big step
  • Mile (mi) - about a 20-minute walk

Common Mistakes

Confusing centimeters and millimeters

Why it's wrong: Both are small units with similar names. One centimeter equals 10 millimeters.

Using the wrong unit for the object size

Why it's wrong: Measuring a building in millimeters gives huge, confusing numbers.

Correct: Match the unit to the object: mm for tiny things, cm for small, m for medium, km for large distances
