Telling Time
Reading the Hour Hand
The hour hand points to 3. What hour is it?
Find the hour hand: The hour hand is the SHORT hand = Short hand identified
See where it points: It points directly at the number 3 = Points to 3
Read the hour: When the hour hand points to 3, the hour is 3 = 3 o'clock
Answer: It is 3 o'clock (3:00)
Reading Minutes
The minute hand points to 6. How many minutes is that?
Find the minute hand: The minute hand is the LONG hand = Long hand identified
Count by 5s: Each number represents 5 minutes: 1=5, 2=10, 3=15, 4=20, 5=25, 6=30 = 6 means 30 minutes
State the minutes: When the minute hand points to 6, it's 30 minutes past the hour = 30 minutes
Answer: The minute hand at 6 means 30 minutes (half past the hour)
Reading a Complete Time
The hour hand is between 7 and 8, and the minute hand points to 3. What time is it?
Read the hour: The hour hand is past 7 but not yet at 8, so the hour is 7 = Hour is 7
Count minutes: Minute hand at 3: count by 5s to 3 (5, 10, 15) = 15 minutes
Combine hour and minutes: Hour 7 + 15 minutes = 7:15 = 7:15
Answer: The time is 7:15 (seven fifteen, or quarter past seven)
Digital to Analog
A digital clock shows 10:45. Where should the hands be on an analog clock?
Find the hour hand position: The hour is 10, but since it's 45 minutes past, the hour hand is between 10 and 11 = Hour hand between 10 and 11
Find the minute hand position: 45 minutes: divide by 5 = 9, so minute hand points to 9 = Minute hand at 9
Describe the clock: Short hand between 10 and 11, long hand at 9 = Clock shows 10:45
Answer: Hour hand between 10 and 11, minute hand pointing to 9
Mistake: Confusing the hour and minute hands
Why: Both hands look similar and move around the clock face.
Correct: Remember: the SHORT hand is for hours, the LONG hand is for minutes. Think 'S' for Short and Small numbers (1-12 hours).
Mistake: Reading minutes as the number shown, not multiplied by 5
Why: Students see the minute hand at 4 and say '4 minutes' instead of '20 minutes'.
Correct: Each number on the clock represents 5 minutes. Minute hand at 4 means $4 \times 5 = 20$ minutes.
Mistake: Saying the wrong hour when the hour hand is between numbers
Why: When it's 7:45, the hour hand is close to 8, so students say 8:45.
Correct: The hour doesn't change until the minute hand reaches 12. If the hour hand hasn't passed the next number, use the smaller number.
School Schedule
Students need to read clocks to know when classes start and end.
If math class starts at 9:30 and lasts 45 minutes, it ends at 10:15.
Catching Transportation
Buses and trains run on schedules, so reading time accurately is important.
If the bus comes at 8:20 and it takes 10 minutes to walk to the stop, you should leave by 8:10.
Analog clocks have two hands: short (hour) and long (minute)
Each number on a clock represents 5 minutes for the minute hand
1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 minute = 60 seconds
AM is for morning (midnight to noon), PM is for afternoon and evening (noon to midnight)
Digital clocks show hours:minutes (like 3:45)
Q: Why do clocks only show numbers 1-12 if there are 24 hours in a day?
A: Most clocks use a 12-hour system, cycling twice per day. We use AM (ante meridiem = before noon) for midnight to noon, and PM (post meridiem = after noon) for noon to midnight. Some clocks and many digital devices use 24-hour time where 13:00 = 1:00 PM.
Q: What does 'o'clock' mean?
A: 'O'clock' is short for 'of the clock.' We say it when the minute hand is at 12 (exactly on the hour), like 3 o'clock means 3:00.
Q: Why is the minute hand longer than the hour hand?
A: The minute hand is longer so it's easier to read the exact minute. Since there are more minute marks to point to (60) than hour marks (12), a longer hand helps us see exactly where it's pointing.
